CareTracker Success Story Alpine Fireside Rockford, Illinois Alpine Fireside, located in Rockford is a 99-bed facility comprised of three units—shelter care, intermediate care, and a Medicare skilled nursing unit. Just a little over a year ago, the staff at Alpine Fireside, like at most facilities, found themselves struggling with the traditional paper forms used for documentation. It came to light that when CNA’s did their documentation, they waited until the end of the shift and therefore weren’t able to record all their observations. In many cases the CNA’s would complete the forms in the same way as the person on the earlier shift. It was also discovered that the documentation supported what the staff felt the resident could do, not what actually occurred. With the implementation of CareTracker, the accuracy of ADL’s, bowel and bladder, and intake and output tracking has improved dramatically. Also, the social services staff uses the system, so they are able to accurately record behaviors on all three shifts. “Before, we were not capturing what we are doing for the resident and therefore were not getting credit for it,” explains Gordon Oksnevad, administrator. As an added bonus, because of CareTracker’s integration with Alpine Fireside’s clinical software, they are able to populate sections G (ADL’s) and P (Special Treatments and Procedures) of the MDS form with the click of a button. There are several major advantages of the CareTracker system at Alpine Fireside according to Oksnevad. “We have more accurate documentation, with no holes in our documentation. Data for managers is at their fingertips so they can do their care plans. We can accurately and efficiently complete the MDS, while at the same time we are providing improved resident care.” After being introduced to Resource Systems’ CareTracker through one of their other software vendors, the decision was made to implement the system in August 2004, on the same day the facility became Medicare certified. Oksnevad explains, “As we became Medicare certified, we realized it was more important to capture ADL information for accurate completion of the MDS form and CareTracker makes that possible.” |
