CareTracker Success Story Westminster Village North
Indianapolis, Indiana
Westminster Village North is an accredited, non-profit 132-bed skilled facility
near Geist and Castleton in Indianapolis. The health center is part of a
57-acre continuing care campus that includes independent and assisted living.
Challenge
According to Director of Nursing, Marcia Hall, Westminster Village North
previously used paper forms for collecting supportive documentation. A nurse
consultant with Thomas Healthcare Consulting mentioned the advantages of
electronic supportive documentation and introduced Westminster Village North to
the CareTracker program.
Solution
In advance of the system implementation, the facility hung signs around the
facility, even in the staff bathrooms, saying, “The Kiosk is Coming”. The signs,
along with management’s enthusiasm provided a positive outlook. “As CareTracker
was implemented in the facility, the CNA’s really seemed to enjoy it
immediately. They like the idea of no more paper forms.” Care Plan Coordinator,
Stacy Stamm, explained.
“The staff readily accepted this,” Marcia said. “All the nurses were delighted
at what we could accomplish with it. It is being received better than any of us
anticipated.”
Westminster Village North initially used the system to track ADLs, depression,
and behavior. Gradually other information was added.
Results
Marcia explains several benefits from a clinical standpoint: “We monitor
toileting for each resident for the first seven days. CareTracker streamlines
the collection of data to aid nursing in developing an individualized toileting
program for the resident. That is a tremendous help.”
“Documentation of food consumption is another area where CareTracker helps. It
cues the staff to input the information,” Marcia said. “It also provides
documentation for Continuous Quality Improvement.”
During the health center’s recent state survey, the surveyor asked for some
specific information about fluid intake in the Alzheimer’s unit.
“We ran a report for the specific dates and residents and that was the end of
that question. It was nice because the surveyors received exactly the
information they needed, no more or no less,” explained Colleen Major, another
Care Plan Coordinator.
“Our staff feels more involved in the process and believes what they say really
counts,” said Marcia. “We have incredibly good documentation with CareTracker.
It is an excellent system.”
